It's not a flaw. The constraint is the beginning. Every x has to go somewhere. 1 can go to 1 - k or 1 + k. Since 1 - k is not a real image, only 1 + k is left. The problem folds very quickly after that, leaving only one of two possibilities for each number.
When I have some time I will try to solve this problem in a general way by applying constraint logic.
