I agree with you 100%. You misunderstand the intention of my post. There is no tutorial or book that is going to give you the kind of knowledge we are talking about here either.

That knowledge is only going to come from lots of time at the command line, helped by frequent references to the man pages, which is a very helpful and underused resource by beginners.

Even experienced users often refer to the manpages to look up some less used option they can't remember, or to figure out some idiosyncracies in syntax between, say the POSIX or BSD implementations of a command.

So it's good to get in the habit of using the manpages early and often.
