My guess is that most of the interviewers are looking for your usage of these data structures over the utilities that each of the language provides.
For example one guy that interviewed me once would have asked me to implement the sort I was discribing there because he would like to see how I would do it, then proceed to do the removal, and then do the actual problem.
At least from my experience I have always been told to not use any of these utility functions. Just my two cents =D
Side note: he would also start asking about the time and space complexity from those calls to "remove".
