Easy should be:
Conceptually easy to grok
Easy to implement
For the average programmer, the a optimal solution should be fairly clear (whether or not they choose the optimal solution to implement)
As I began answering, the futz involved made me question whether or not I was missing a more obvious solution (after all, it was an easy problem, right). I must have burned an hour or two, before giving up on a more elegant solution just going back to my straighforward, but tediously messy iterative approach.
