TÃtulo da tese: Temperatura de compensação e comportamento crÃtico de modelos de Ising em camadas. Title of the thesis: Compensation temperature and critical behavior of layered Ising models. Abstract We study the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a layered Ising ferrimagnet. The system is composed of two types of non-equivalent planes arranged alternately, so that the system can have only two planes (bilayer) or infinite planes (multilayer). The intralayer couplings are ferromagnetic while the interlayer interactions are antiferromagnetic and one of the types of plane is randomly diluted. The study is carried out within a Monte Carlo approach employing the multiple histogram re-weighting method and finite-size scaling tools. In addition, we perform mean-field and effective-field calculations for the same model. The occurrence of a compensation phenomenon is verified and the compensation and critical temperatures of the model are obtained as functions of the Hamiltonian parameters. We present a detailed discussion of the regions of the parameter space where the compensation effect is present or absent. Our Monte Carlo, mean-field, and effective-field results are then compared with the pair approximation applied to the same model by Balcerzak and SzaÅ‚owski (2014). We also studied the critical behavior of the multilayer system through a finite-size scaling analysis for various thermodynamic quantities. Our estimates of the critical exponents α, β, γ, and ν are consistent with the universality class of the three-dimensional random (-site or -bond) Ising model.
