Work Experience
Graduate Research Student
San Francisco State University• August 2020 - December 2022
-Read and interpreted my former labmate’s automation code, then challenged the status quo by vastly improving upon by developing my own automation software and hardware for biological research to create high-throughput data collection of changes in organisms. Link: https://github.com/JohnDoRight/RoboCam -Quickly learned PySimpleGUI–a Python library–and wrote an easy-to-use interface, demonstrating Python proficiency. -Created easy-to-read documentation, presented my thesis to the general non-scientific audience.
Intern
IBM• May 2021 - August 2021
-Reading and interpreting my supervisor’s Python code, then writing my own to analyze datasets generated from an image dataset of 14 thousand. -Applied ETL practices on image dataset, then created data visualizations in Excel and Python/PANDAS for analysis to improve the autofocus algorithms, challenging status quo by using image segmentation to increase accuracy. -Quickly learned CNN machine learning algorithms, then applied it for scientific research. -Work would later be published: https://doi.org/10.1117/12.2612438.
Biomedical Engineer Tutor
California State University, Long Beach• August 2019 - May 2020
Tutor at the College of Engineering covering subjects such as circuits, MATLAB, biomechanics, statistics for engineers, Arduino (C++), and bioinformatics (using Python).
Undergraduate Research Assistant
California State University, Long Beach• August 2019 - February 2020
Assisting Dr. Ayala Perla and Dr. Roger Lo’s research titled “Micro-engineered 3D Vascularized Culture System (Organs-on-chips)”, my task was designing the automation and incubation environment for organ cells.
Professional Tutor
Orange Coast College• August 2017 - February 2020
Math tutor, workshop teacher, and math counselor for Self-Paced Mathematics (Basic Math to Trigonometry). Occasionally, mentoring and exam creation and grading.
Tutor
Teammate Tutoring• August 2015 - August 2017
-Drove to client’s homes or desired locations to tutor high school students in from Basic Mathematics to Calculus and Chemistry. -Asked my clients how they approached their math problems, observed their thought process during their explanations, evaluated where they went wrong or what direction to push them, and then asked them questions to direct their minds to help them solve their own problem. Or I would demonstrate a similar problem to help them think through their work. -Filled out timesheets, tracking my own time, and coordinated with Director Kenni for available times and subjects I could tutor in.

California State University, Long Beach
Biomedical Engineering, BS• August 2017 - May 2020
Machine Learning Human Gait Event Detection at CSULB (Fall 2019-Spring 2020) -Led team where we applied ETL practices in MATLAB by extracting the data we needed from a published dataset, cleaning, and analyzing the EMG (muscle electrical activity) datasets to detect and predict human gait events using machine learning algorithms in MATLAB, achieving 60-70% detection accuracy. -Presented to fellow classmates, won Biomedical Engineering Senior Project at CSULB Spring 2020.
