Kipit• February 2017 - Present
Kipit builds bag liners that help users keep track of their belongings by sending them notifications before they leave anything behind. Led the engineering development, from inception to fully working prototype, of a consumer-facing hardware product. The system uses HF RFID technology through an antenna and module embedded in a bag liner and passive RFID stickers on items. Developed a React Native app for Android and iOS devices. The app connects to the lining via BLE and allows users to register and manage their needed items, view what’s in their bag at any given time and track an item’s last known location. The implementation leverages Redux state management, React Navigation, Typescript strong typing, ESLint and Jest testing. Conducted user interviews to validate assumptions and inform feature development. Created multiple iterations of low to high-fidelity digital, Looks-Like and Works-Like prototypes and tested these designs with prospective target users. Filed a provisional patent as lead inventor to protect our implementation of RFID within a cluttered environment and our system of smart notifications. Conducted in-depth research of FCC, UL and other compliance regulations. Devised long-term planning and strategy. Managed a part-time team of 4 people: 2 engineers, 1 designer and 1 legal expert. Was awarded the 2018 Cornell Tech Startup Award and $100,000 in funding. Participated in the Futureworks incubator, the Startup Boost and Elevate accelerators, the Natural Science Foundation User Research program and was featured in the NYT. Kipit is currently a NewLab member company.
