The Challenge

Passion is everything. Whether it be a chance to hike into the clouds on some farflung slope, unleash your inner warrior or tick off the next must-do from your bucket list, we’ve all got itches that just have to be scratched.

This year at Booking.com, we’re inviting the most passionate creative minds to help turn the web into an even more addictive and rewarding environment. By introducing a new way of searching, we’ve helped develop the most comprehensive search of its kind in the travel industry – perfectly matching people’s unique passions and interests with the best destination and accommodation, and changing the very face of travel search as we know it.

Mobile mercenaries, are you up for the challenge? We’re calling on you to follow your passion and find innovative ways to build a solid mobile experience and open up the world for all the world’s most daring adventurers.

There will be six system graded questions coded and scored on HackerRank and created by our awesome Booking engineers. The questions will be solvable in Java, Objective-C, and Swift. Once completed, you will be eligible to win prizes. In order to be eligible for our grand prize, you will need to answer an open-ended bonus question that will be graded by the Booking.com team.

Let your passion blaze a trail to Amsterdam on an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the largest hackathon ever hosted by Booking.com. From October 14 to 16, you’ll have 48 hours to change the face of global travel and hack on our Booking.com API alongside 80 of the best and brightest in back-end, front-end and mobile.

The Rules

  • The challenge is open to everyone, regardless of their location or passion.
  • There are five system-graded challenges to solve, all coded on Hackerrank. The system supports 20 languages. You can take a look at the environment in which your code will run.
  • Scoring details for each system-graded challenge will become available when the contest begins. Hackerrank's scoring decisions are final for system-graded challenges.
  • If HackerRank and/or Booking.com identifies any suspicious activity (i.e. creation of multiple accounts), then we deserve the right to remove users from the leaderboard.
  • Participants will be ranked by score. If two participants have the same score, the tie will be broken by comparing submission times from the time that you started the challenges. The fastest hacker will win.
  • The system-graded challenge is open for a week. You can choose to start the challenge anytime from Friday, August 05, 2016 12:00 CEST to Thursday, August 11, 2016 17:00 CEST.
  • Once you started the challenge, you will only have six hours to submit your answers to the system-graded questions.
  • In order to qualify for the grand prize, you will need to complete both the system-graded challenges and an open-ended challenge. The open-ended challenge will shared with all participants on August 11, and will be evaluated offline by the Booking.com team.
  • The open-ended question will not count toward the other prizes. Answer it only if want to pack your bags for Amsterdam and take part in Booking.com onsite Hackathon.
  • Please expect 6-8 weeks delivery time for the prizes.
