IMHO, I agree that the problem description should define the coordinate system. I don't think it matters whether the system is cartesian, is analogous to matrices, or is completely unique to this problem. Whatever it is should be stated.
One can deduce the system through process of elimination by examining test inputs and outputs, but that seems a distraction from the skills this problem is designed to help grow.
